Midterm Bingo
On September 10th, at the GOP Convention, President Trump led his followers in a pledge to “cheat like hell” in the midterm elections. This pledge occurred after months of redistricting (a.k.a gerrymandering), attempts to restrict mail-in voting, demands for voter rolls, and attempts to pass legislation that could disenfranchise large numbers of voters through onerous identification requirements. These stories can feel overwhelming, but many of them are predictable. Some are even announced far in advance.
It’s easy to lose track of individual stories in the deluge of news characteristic of “flood the zone” media strategies. It can get confusing to keep track of what behavior is abnormal amid attempts to aggressively normalize anti-democratic behaviors that would likely have been career-ending scandals a decade ago.
In order to help keep track of actions from the Trump administration as they occur in the final countdown to the election and the weeks following, we have created a bingo board. A bingo board gives a visual representation of how widespread the issue is as more squares get checked off. It also allows you to define a problem before it has occurred, so you can spot when a goalpost moves in the national narrative around what behavior is acceptable or normal. Please feel free to use our ideas for squares or create your own. You can create a board based on what you think are the most likely threats, what you are most personally worried about, or what would most encourage you to take action. We urge you to share your board, compare notes with friends and family, and commit to taking some action each time you check off a square. Example actions could include donating a dollar or more to a pro-democracy organization of your choice, posting your updated bingo board on social media, creating or amplifying a message about the action that caused you to check off a new square, or posting official information from the Secretary of State about early voting in your area on a new platform. The Elections page from the Massachusetts Secretary of State website can be found here.
