Trump Dissolves Congress in Response to Epstein Inquiry
On Wednesday, President Donald J. Trump issued an executive order dissolving Congress for 30 days, under his (probably false) Article 2 powers, claiming that its ongoing inquiry of the Epstein files was impeding the work of his administration, potentially causing a national security crisis.
In a scathing Truth Social post after he issued the executive order, the president wrote:
“I warned them to stay away from the Epstein stuff. But CROOKED DEMOCRATS keep asking for files THAT SAY NOTHING and the far left FAKE NEWS goes along with it. THE American People know DONALD J TRUMP and Epstein were NOT FRIENDS, BUT THE CLINTONS WERE. IT SAYS SO IN THE FILES. Very nasty stuff. Now So-Called MAGA Republicans that owe me their seats with TRUMP ENDORSEMENT ask questions. Bunch of Busybody RINOS Not Doing Their Jobs. THAT IS WHY I AM GIVING CONGRESS A TIMEOUT! My EXECUTIVE ORDER says that executive orders by DONALD J TRUMP are LAW and Congress can cry all they want until they are ready to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
When asked at her daily press conference whether the president’s actions were constitutional or not, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt scoffed that “the Constitution is only valid if it serves the American people, who only President Trump can speak for since they voted for him in the largest landslide in American history.”
Speaker Mike Johnson, upon hearing the news, planned to pray for guidance, declaring that “This is a Christian Nation and God will not allow anything to harm the United States of America.” Majority Leader Thune took a wait-and-see attitude, saying that “sometimes it is hard to see that the president is always right, so we should keep an eye on where this is heading.”

Meanwhile, Democrats were in an uproar and marched to the Capitol but were barred from entering by military personnel who Trump had activated to secure the building. Another Social Truth post defended the move with “THIS IS ALL WEAK PELOSI HAD TO DO ON J6. NOT AS STRONG AS TRUMP. VERY SAD FOR LOSER DEMOCRATS BUT VERY GOOD FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.” The Democrats threatened to sue and demanded that the Supreme Court immediately overturn Trump’s executive order. Court-watchers questioned, though, whether the Democrats on their own had standing to sue, as they are only the minority party in Congress. Republican leaders had no comment about joining such a lawsuit.
The stock market took an immediate dip but rebounded by the afternoon with the realization that the elimination of Congress was only for 30 days and would likely have no impact on the anticipated interest rate reduction at next week’s meeting of the Fed. Our European and Canadian allies reacted in horror, while Hungary, Russia, and other authoritarian regimes simply posted a “smile” emoji. The MAGAverse was positively gleeful, and crypto stocks have soared in value.
In a subsequent interview on Fox News, Trump said this about the 30-day limit in the executive order: “Well, we’ll have to see how it goes. I can always extend it or shorten it depending on how they respond. They’ve got to show Trump some love. They’ve been very mean to me. If they don't watch out, I'll turn the Capitol into condos.”
(This is a developing story, for as long as the Times is allowed to publish.)
